Cuttyhunk Public Library Newsletter 2023

CUTTYHUNK PUBLIC LIBRARY NEWSLETTER

JULY 6, 2023

Our 2023 library summer season is well underway.

We are ecstatic to announce a grant award of 114 new children’s books from The Pilcrow Foundation.  Established in 2013 to continue the work of The Libri Foundation, its mission is to provide new, quality, hardcover children’s books to rural public libraries across the United States.  These books fill a void in our collection with history, math, science, and health and wellness books that would not otherwise be available to our children.

Our grant award was sponsored through a general donation from an anonymous donor in Massachusetts, a donation by the Friends of the Cuttyhunk Public Library, and through the Foundation’s donor-sponsored programs.  As part of the donor-sponsored programs, we thank Mr. Hall Berenson & Mrs. Laura Ackerman of Colorado, Drs. Bill Strawbridge & Meg Wallhagen of California, Delta Kappa Gamma, and Shout Mouse Press for providing new books.  Our library has hugely benefited from receiving this grant, and we can’t say thank you enough for The Pilcrow Foundation’s and donors support.  It is much appreciated.

The library is holding a fundraising event on Saturday, August 12th, at 5:00 pm.  Samuel Harps, the Artistic Director of the Shades Repertory Theater in New York, will be presenting selected filmed scenes from his full length play on Paul Cuffe.  He along with two other speakers will offer a broad scope of Paul Cuffe’s life including his early life on Cuttyhunk.  Additional details will be forthcoming in the next few weeks.  We are thrilled to have Mr. Harps’ share his views of Paul Cuffe, and we hope you will join us on August 12th.  Don’t forget to mark your calendars.

Other library news:  The library continues to sell merchandise that includes books written by island members, new totes showing the original and new library buildings, and note cards designed by local artists.  As in the past, July and August raffle tickets are available for purchase – at the library, Island Market, and Raw Bar.  Also available for sale are used books and jigsaw puzzles.

Work continues on inputting our collection on a new software program.  It is anticipated that the library will have Internet service in the next few weeks.  The interior entryway continues to be a work in progress with plans to add shelving and storage.

Library hours remain the same as last year:  Monday and Thursday 9:00 – 12:00; Tuesday 2:00 – 6:00; Friday 2:00 – 5:00; Saturday 10:00 – 12:00.  The library is closed on Wednesdays and Sundays.

Children’s Story Hour is held on Thursday mornings from 9:30 to 10:45.  Children 6 and older are welcome.  Children under 6 must be accompanied by an adult.

As usual, book donations are appreciated.  Please be sure they are in good condition.  Donated books that are not accessed will be added to our books for sale.  Donations should be dropped off when the library is open.

Don’t forget to keep our library in mind when considering donations.  Donations should be made payable to Friends of the Cuttyhunk Public Library, Inc. (P.O. Box 10, Cuttyhunk, MA 02713)

Stop by, browse through our new books, and thank you for continuing to support our library.
